Liz Castelli [Partner / Chief Operations Officer / “Tinsel’s HOW”] Picks:
I enjoy the challenge of a raw white box space. This kind of blank canvas provides so many possibilities and ways to explore unexpected floor plans, lighting themes, and ways to dress the space. And those beams and rigging points are screaming for a hanging installation – our specialty.
On the other end of the spectrum, spaces like this that are already packed with bold details and design elements are fun to work in. We challenge our team to explore ways to give spaces like this a totally new vibe without clashing with what’s already in place. I’d love to see this ’70s speakeasy designed as something very different, like a ski chalet or night circus.
This space is way outside of my design comfort zone. The color blocks and super mod architecture are very specific and hard to compete with. It would be a fun project to really lean into this to do some quirky photographable moments like completely filling the downstairs lounge with inflatables or covering that bold outdoor facade with panels of hot pink and orange sequins.

I’m a voracious reader with my own growing collection of books in English, Spanish, French, Tagalog, and recently Swedish. It’s my dream to have a library like this in my own home, so styling a long dinner table in a space like this is the next best thing.
I would love to throw a wild brand launch party here. Keep the delicious gray velvet club chairs, pull the work tables, add a whiskey bar or two, and throw in some performers on stilts for good measure.
More and more, we are being asked by clients to plan internal team events and retreats to help build company culture. The way this property is broken up is perfect for breakout sessions and a few “surprise and delight” moments between workshops (think: pop-up ice cream shop or photo-op space). Then the team could end each day with dinner and drinks by the pool. Pretty solid setting for promoting work/life balance.

I always love a venue that feels like entertaining in your home — if your home was the set of a really sexy television series about New York City. The spacious open plan with plenty of sleek seating and places to perch works well whether you’re standing with cocktails, grooving to DJ, or just curling up for an intimate conversation.
Historic 5-acre Hillside Estate
This venue is stunning. I’m a sucker for tile work, sprawling garden space, and bougainvillea. There’s just nothing like this in NYC. You don’t need to do much to dress up a space like this, but that courtyard is perfect for a runway presentation or beautifully decorated long communal table.
The idea of giving life to a new space like this firehouse (or an old bank or closed schoolhouse or retired church or shuttered pharmacy) is always so thrilling. Sometimes it’s fun to “lean in” to the setting, playing up the building’s history, but most often we task our team with figuring out ways to turn a space like this on its head to design it as anything but a firehouse.
