The Space

About the Space Our 5-story landmarked Mansion/Museum is located in the very heart of Greenwich Village, just off of 5th Avenue, near Washington Square Park. Step inside and find yourself in 1800's New York City. HISTORY: —Our Gallery has proudly been owned and managed by women since its founding on November 19, 1969. —Our Mansion/Museum was built in the mid-1800's by the Brevoort Family, who had settled here from Holland in the 17th century. A dazzling Ballroom was added to the Mansion's Second Floor in 1899. The Ballroom was designed by the world-renowned architect Stanford White. Stanford White was the genius whose work gave birth to New York's Beaux-Arts Movement. Every room in our Mansion/Museum still has its own original fireplace and mantel. HAVE YOU ALREADY... Have you already attended an event here at our Mansion/Museum? If you are new to us, I would like to suggest that you take a moment to read our Reviews. Our Reviews will give you a good idea of what you can look forward to. Our Mansion/Museum is perfect for events ranging from the ultra-formal to completely casual Birthday Parties, Anniversaries, Cocktail Parties, Fashion Launches, Family Reunions, and unstuffy Corporate Meetings and Events. We also love to host special occasions and celebrations such as Weddings, Engagement Parties, Bridal Showers, Baby Showers, and Sweet 16 parties. We are ideal if you would like a unique (not unusual, but truly unique) Film-shoot / Photo-shoot. Here is some of WHAT YOU WILL FIND: The First Floor of our Mansion: Our First Floor consists of two main rooms— —A Stunning preserved 1850's Parlor, whose cabinets are filled with a century's worth of fascinating Antiques. The Parlor is 25'x 14'. —Our Glass Gallery aglow with its twinkling Permanent Exhibition of antique American glass and ceramics. The Glass Gallery is 20'x15'. —The Restroom A thoroughly-modern (thank goodness) restroom. The Second Floor of our Mansion: —In addition to the Ballroom, there is also the Formal Dining Room/ Gallery Exhibition Space with its marble floor, lead glass doors, and the original fireplace and mantelpiece. —A Full-service Kitchen —And, of course, the restroom. Our Second Floor is all but one-half city block long! Don't be surprised if you and your guests feel as though you have stepped into the Ballroom scene of Cinderella—a fairy tale where princes and princesses always find their one true love—and a happy ending. If you are not able to visit the Mansion before booking it, then I give you my word: There is not a prettier—or more interesting—space for your Event in all of New York City. —The Ballroom: Our dazzling Ballroom welcomes you to enter the world of New York's High Society,1899. Dancing—even prancing—is absolutely fine within our Mansion/Museum. Our Ballroom becomes a real-wood dance floor by moving some of the larger pieces from the Ballroom's center to the sidelines. The Ballroom is 60' x 15' with a Baroque ceiling that is 20' high. —The Dining Room/ Gallery Exhibition Space: Also on the Second Floor is the Formal-But-Fun Dining Room/ Gallery Exhibition Space that is sheer perfection for your Buffet Service and Bar. The Dining Room is 30'x 16'. —Our Kitchen: Also on the Second Floor is our spacious kitchen that is inconspicuous but immediately accessible from both the Dining Room and the Ballroom. Refrigerate, freeze, cook and prepare catered foods. The kitchen has a small terrace. Leave the terrace door open for a constant flow of fresh air. —The Restroom: A lovely, and thoroughly modern, restroom is also on Second Floor. CAPACITY For longer events at which guests are expected to come and go, we allow for a guest list of 200. For events at which guests are expected to stay for the entire time, we allow for a guest list of 150. Please let us know how many guests will be in attendance, and we will suggest the best setup for catered hors d'oeuvres and a buffet dinner. Seated dinners can comfortably accommodate approximately 50 guests. ART & DECOR On the walls of the Ballroom and the Dining Room is a permanent exhibition the beloved Al Hirschfeld's legendary art. In our experience, Hirschfeld's art provides a terrific conversation-starter among your honored guests. In the Ballroom, a grand piano awaits. And should you desire it, we can suggest a perfect cabaret pianist to play for you. The Ballroom is lighted by a one-of-a-kind 'Phantom of the Opera' Chandelier covered with antique glass globes. The chandelier was designed by us 1985, so we really do mean it is one-of-a-kind! There is other lighting, including a 12-foot skylight that bathes the Ballroom in a natural, ever-changing Aurora borealis. Looking up through our skylight, you will actually see a tree as gorgeous as it is gigantic—and it's been thriving here since the time that the Indians owned Manhattan Island! Looking out through our opulent and original huge arched window (it's made of zinc-glass, which pre-dates "leaded" glass), you'll have a panoramic view of the flourishing gardens and trees of this historic Greenwich Village neighborhood. And if you're lucky enough to be here when it's snowing, you will feel like you're inside a snow globe—but you'll be nice and warm! ACCESSIBILITY Our Ballroom, the Formal Dining Room, the Kitchen, and the Restroom are on the Second floor, which is up one short-ish flight of stairs (5 steps). LOCATION Our Mansion/Museum is located in the very heart of Greenwich Village, just off Washington Square. It is one of the safest and most accessible locations in all of New York City. For those arriving by car, there is an underground parking garage directly across the street. For those arriving by Subway, we are a short easy walk from all major lines, with both Express and Local stations nearby. 363 people have saved this space Rules Congratulations! You have chosen a space that is one-of-a-kind. There is simply no place like it—not anywhere. Our Mansion/Museum is perfect for events ranging from the ultra-formal to completely casual Birthday Parties, Anniversaries, Cocktail Parties, Family Reunions, and Corporate Meetings and Events. We also love to host special occasions and celebrations such as Weddings, Engagement Parties, Bridal Showers, Baby Showers, and Sweet 16 parties. Our Mansion is ideal for unique (not unusual, but unique) Film-shoots and Photo-shoots. We will do our best to ensure our two Golden Rules: That you, yourself, have a wonderful time—and that every one of your guests will forever remember their experience here with you in our Mansion/Museum. So in keeping with our two Golden Rules, here are the best policies that we've put in place: —In order for us to successfully prepare for you, it is important that the number of guests should not exceed the number of attendees listed when we accepted your booking. If you suddenly realize that your guest list is growing, please discuss your new expectations with us as soon as possible to see if we can accommodate the expanded number. —In general, we do not book paid-ticket parties. We may make exceptions for certain non-profit organizations, however, we do not book any events where tickets may be purchased either at our door or inside our space. —Alcohol is fine for your guests who are at least 21 years of age. But for everyone's sake, we require that you hire a licensed bartender to serve it. And for the comfort and safety of all of your guests, if you are planning to serve liquor, we require that you also provide food. —Dancing—even prancing—is absolutely fine within our Mansion/Museum. Our Ballroom becomes a dance floor by moving some of the larger pieces from the Ballroom's center to the sidelines. —DJs are fine, however, the music should never be so loud that our neighbors hear it. —In any case, pre-recorded music flowing through speakers needs to play its own finale by 10:55 PM. One sophisticated alternative to having a DJ, is to have live music, which is especially wonderful in the hands of a party pianist. I've seen lots of parties, and there is no question that guests are much more enthusiastic about live harmony then they are when the music is canned. —Depending on the size of your Event, we may require you to have event insurance. Event insurance is easily obtained and can be surprisingly inexpensive—especially given that when you purchase insurance, what you are really purchasing is peace of mind. —A great Event begins by booking enough time for setting up before your guests arrive. Please read on… In our experience, you and your setter-uppers may need at least 1 1/2 hours to prepare the space for your Event. Remember that you will want to be relaxed, smiling, and happy when your guests begin arriving! We also recommend that you give yourself enough time after your Event for striking the set. I use the expression, "Striking the set," which comes to us from the world of theater, because for you, your Event will be very much like your Opening Night on Broadway. When it comes to taking down your decorations, you will almost certainly want to carefully separate the keepsakes that you want to preserve from those items that have already served their purpose. So we recommend that you book 1 1/2 hours to carefully un-decorate after your Event. And please also read the following paragraph about food. Please make arrangements so that all open food, beverages, and their related products are taken away immediately after your guests have joyously said "Farewell!" Most caterers will be happy to do this for you, but please leave ample time for your caterers to accomplish this. Food that we have already agreed to keep after your Event will always be given for people to eat. We do not throw away edible food! —And, finally, if the time whizzes by, and you are having a great Event—if you and your guests want to stay, it will almost always be okay! I will close this list in the same way as I began it. We will do our best to ensure our two Golden Rules: That you have a wonderful time at your own Event, and that every one of your guests will forever remember their unique experience here in our Mansion/Museum.
