The Space
Adams Farm, a historically significant property, is set on 52 pastoral acres that encompass the original farmhouse, a guesthouse, mountain views, horse barn, pond, orchards and hiking and riding trails. The farmhouse, dating back to 1760, was meticulously restored to its original grandeur and rebuilt in 2015. Preserved are the hand hewn post and beam construction, original wide plank flooring and 4 original stone fireplaces. The main level is an open floor plan with a dramatic 2-story beamed entry, a kitchen/great room, dining area, den (or bedroom) with full bath, laundry room, mudroom and half bath. The remodeled state-of-the-art chef’s kitchen has designer cabinetry and Thermador stainless steel appliances. A main level master suite wing includes a luxurious, large master bathroom with radiant heated tile floor, double tub, walk-in shower and with double vanity marble sinks, a library and a sitting room with a fireplace. On the second level are 3 additional bedrooms. Two bedrooms share a bath; the other has a bath en suite. The rooms are connected by a loft/media room. State-of-the-art mechanical systems have been installed including Internet controlled heating and air conditioning, a 20 kilowatt generator, and energy efficient foam insulation throughout. The septic system and well are also new. The home is bright and airy and all rooms have views of the surrounding mature plantings, meadows and heirloom apple and pear orchards. The renovated charming guest house has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a screened-in porch, new kitchen appliances and a state-of-the-art HVAC system. A 2,000 square foot horse barn features 4 stalls, tack room and 2 roofed rooms opening onto a large fenced paddock. There is also a second story hayloft. Adams Farm is a true paradise for the nature enthusiast and avid outdoorsman alike. The 52-acre property is studded with fragrant fruit orchards, mature plantings and lilacs galore. Much of the surrounding land is in conservation, ensuring that all of the natural beauty and tranquility remain forever. Trails abound, ideal for hiking, cross country skiing, snow shoeing or riding lead to a tranquil pond with a fire pit, dock and beach area. The pond is perfect for ice skating in winter. One could develop even more trails throughout the property, which is surrounded by the original hand-built stone walls, dating back to the 1700s.On the north side of this country compound is an additional building site (with approved septic) that has magnificent views of the Berkshire mountains and of the iconic Southfield Church steeple. Adams Farm’s first known owners were Aaron Adams and his wife Betsey Smith who were married on December 6, 1792 in the First Church of New Marlborough. The fireplace face stone displays the original hand engraving of the names Smith and Adams. Aaron Adams’ grandfather, Joseph Adams was a founding father of the town of New Marlborough and the First Church of New Marlborough. Aaron Adam’s father Simon was a Captain in the Revolutionary War and was a second cousin to John Quincy Adams. During the restoration process, many artifacts were found in the main farmhouse, including a bayonet from a French rifle dating back to the French Indian War. This beautiful country estate is located only minutes from the acclaimed Southfield Store and downtown Norfolk, Connecticut and is in close proximity to Ski Butternut, downtown Great Barrington and many of the Berkshires’ premier cultural attractions.
