Wappinger Cottage; Riverfront Cabin Escape
PoughkeepsieHosted by Nicholas
The Space
Welcome to Wappinger Cottage. We are located in the Hudson Valley on the divide between the Town of Poughkeepsie & La Grange, less than two hours from New York City by car or Metro-North train. Wappinger Cottage is a Scandinavian-inspired architect-designed escape from the hustle and bustle of New York City. Immersed in landscaped gardens and hugged by the Wappinger Creek, it's the perfect place for relaxing and getting back to nature with friends and family - or enjoy the peace all to yourself. More information The space We are located at the end of a short private road and not visible from the rest of the quaint, established neighborhood. On approach you will be discover a mysterious black barn-like structure. Follow the path to the wrap-around deck to be greeted with walls of glass and a beautiful view of the trees and creek. Flowing from the deck is a spacious open-plan living and dining space with a modern and efficient kitchen; two queen bedrooms with built-in closets- one with ensuite bathroom; a bunk room sleeping a further two guests; another bathroom with a tub; and a laundry room. The whole house has underfloor heating, which heats the polished concrete floors and radiates a cozy heat. In warm weather, large screened casement windows and sliding doors naturally ventilate the interior. High speed Wi-Fi, Apple TV, Nest thermostat and August key-free access bring modern technology to the countryside. Despite the vernacular appearance of the house from the outside, the crisp white interior houses a collection of C20th classics: The John Pawson inspired oak dining table is paired with Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chairs; an Eero Saarinen Womb Chair sits beside an LCW Chair in American walnut by Charles and Ray Eames; and Achille Castiglioni’s Arco Lamp overhangs a Nelson Platform Bench. Elsewhere you’ll find designs by Danish companies Menu and HAY and German designer Konstantin Grcic; Swedish and American rugs; and the owner’s collection of books, magazines and art. We have an organic vegetable garden, a coop housing chickens & ducks, and a hive of bees on 1.5 acres garden of lawns, native grasses and wild flowers. The sprawling setting affords you privacy from neighbors and the cacophony of birds and the sound of the flowing creek will block out almost all manmade noises. In summer, the house is surrounded by a dense grove of trees. In winter, the view is of fields and distant hills. NYC feels like a world away! Guest access As this is our weekend house, you'll have the entire property to yourself for stays of two weeks or less. On the second weekend, we'll briefly visit to feed the animals and check on the property, then leave you in peace again. Interaction with guests We keep an up-to-date Compendium in Wappinger Cottage which has all the information about the house and local area, including restaurants, supermarkets, activities, hospitals, pharmacies, vineyards, historic Houses and other local tourist attractions and towns to visit. We are always available by phone or email if any issues arise. Other things to note The Wappinger Creek is fed from the Thompson pond below Stissing Mountain almost 30 miles up stream and flows to the Hudson River. We love swimming in the river during summer and encourage you to do so too, but keep in mind that this is a natural waterway with no lifeguards. Entering is at your own risk. You'll have keys to the Egg Flap for the chicken coop so you can collect farm fresh eggs from the ladies each morning. If soiled, a rinse with warm water is enough. They will stay fresh without refrigeration. The vegetable garden is not accessible to guests. There is a bee hive in the SW corner of the property, near the creek. They are mixed breed of Russian, Italian, and Carniolan genetics- winter hardy, prolific honey-makers and friendly. Feel free to view the wonder of the colony as they go about their daily business. In this location they won't be a bother to you at all, if you don't bother them. Observing them from at least 12 ft away will keep you out of harm’s way. Ample off-street parking is available for guests. All booking subject to a cleaning fee, up to $130.
