t took Jennifer and her husband a year to find this eclectic Brooklyn townhouse, which soon became both their homestead and the star of TV commercials, TV shows, and Lifetime original movies. With plenty of open space and high ceilings, it’s no surprise Jennifer says crews tend to be very comfortable there. Her advice to space owners looking to book more productions? Be responsive and organized!
SPLACER: Tell us a little about yourself, what brought you to NYC?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: I was born in Harlem in 1977, but I grew up in the suburbs in Rockland County. My family is from the city so New York City has always been in my blood.
SPLACER: How did you find the Modern loft like townhouse? What attracted you to it?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: We looked for a year at so many ugly houses before we stepped foot in this beautiful townhouse that would become our homestead, studio and future star of TV commercials and lifetime original movies (laughs). We saw it and made an offer that night. I will always remember the rush of excitement, mixed with the overwhelming feeling of “oh boy how are we gonna pull this off”!
SPLACER: What was it like before you entered the space? Any fun or history facts about the space?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: The townhouse was already renovated by a team of Israeli developers – it was their crown jewel. Since then, we have updated many elements to make the space more personal and we are currently finalizing plans for some even further epic, unique, fun renovations! Check back in the new year and you are going to be blown away!
SPLACER: What inspired the overall look of the space?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: I am a folk art loving minimalist, so in general I like to keep the space open, flowing, free of clutter but I like to concentrate certain areas with special little knick knacks that have been collected throughout the years. Most recently we’ve started collecting art from our friends, mostly street artists (my husband is old friends with Swoon, whom we really love and we have a few of her pieces through out the house.)
SPLACER: How can this space be used and what for?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: We have mostly filmed TV shows and commercials. There’s a lot of space and the ceilings are huge, so crews are typically very comfortable. We also have a backyard where everyone loves to play with our chickens!
SPLACER: Any tips for Space Owners?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: Be responsive and organized! We host a lot of “scouts” and not all book, but I make sure I’m available at all times to show the space be it 9.30 am on a Monday or 4 pm on a Thursday – I try to make things as easy as possible for everyone.
SPLACER: Tell us about the events or shoots you’ve hosted.
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: SNL will be shooting at ours soon…We also met with the location scouts for High maintenance and I would LOVE for them to shoot here. It is one of my favorite shows.
SPLACER: What has been your best experience hosting so far? What’s your favorite thing about being a space owner?
JENNIFER MACFARLANE: Our home is a really integral part of our lives in so many way and my philosophy has always been to be open, share and connect. My husband’s way of living is with a speakeasy in our house called The Covert Cocktail Club.
